Austin's fastest Python roadmap: from zero to $120K remote in 4 months
Austin is the only US city where "remote Python developer for a Bay Area company" is a viable career path that still lets you own a house. That single fact — plus no state income tax, plus a real local tech ecosystem — is why every Bay Area engineer moved here in 2020, why half of them stayed, and why the local Python market has quietly become one of the strongest in the country.
This post is the 4-month plan to get in.
The Austin premium is real
Remote Python developer salaries paying Austin residents in 2026, sourced from Salary.com, ZipRecruiter, and Built In Austin:
- Junior remote Python (Bay Area company, Austin resident): $95K-$135K
- Junior on-site Austin (local company): $65K-$95K
- Mid-level remote (2-4 years): $130K-$170K
- Senior remote (5+ years): $170K-$220K
- AI engineer, junior, remote: $110K-$150K (this is the fastest-growing band)
The gap between on-site and remote is real, and it's the whole game. A local Austin startup pays you $75K. A San Francisco company hiring remotely pays you $125K for identical work because their compensation benchmarks against Bay Area comparables, and legally they can't lower your offer just because you live in Texas.
Add zero state income tax and you take home substantially more than a New Yorker earning $150K.
Who's actually hiring in and around Austin
Four groups matter:
Big Tech Austin campuses
Tesla (Giga Texas, Buda), Meta (downtown Austin), Google (downtown), Apple (north Austin), Oracle (waterfront). All hire Python across data platforms, backend services, and ML. Interview bar is FAANG-level. Junior offers are $130K-$180K total comp. Not for month-4 candidates, but a real 2-year target.
Growth-stage startups (South Congress, downtown, East Austin)
Cloudflare Austin, Indeed, Bumble, Q2, HomeAway (now Vrbo/Expedia). Junior Python roles land at $85K-$120K. Interview bar is real but not FAANG.
Remote-friendly SF companies with Austin talent concentration
Stripe, Airbnb, Instacart, Postmates, Notion, Figma. Not headquartered here, but they hire Austin residents specifically because of the timezone overlap and the talent density. Comp is San Francisco tier.
Local Python-heavy shops
Bumble, Q2 Holdings, RetailMeNot, Whole Foods (Amazon-owned but Austin ops), Silicon Labs. Solid mid-market employers with reasonable pace of life.
The 4-month plan
Aggressive but achievable. 2-3 hours a day weekdays, 4-6 on weekends. That's 250-350 hours across 16 weeks. Enough to be junior-ready if you actually finish.
Month 1: Foundations, no shortcuts
Weeks 1-4 are pure fundamentals. No frameworks yet.

Month 2: Pick a stack and ship something
By day 30 you know Python well enough to build. Now specialize. Austin's job market rewards these three stacks specifically:
Backend / FastAPI track (best default)
FastAPI + Pydantic + Postgres + Docker. Build a real API — pick an actual problem you have. Deploy to Fly.io or Railway. Public URL, public GitHub repo, README explaining architecture.
AI engineering track (highest-paying, fastest-growing)

pandas + scikit-learn + one deployment tool. Build a model that answers a specific question with data you scraped or downloaded from Kaggle. Publish the notebook. Bonus points for a Streamlit UI so it's clickable.
Month 3: Second project + open-source contribution
Your month-2 project taught you a stack. Month 3 teaches you what real engineering feels like.
Second project goes deeper. If you did a FastAPI service, add: auth (JWT or Supabase), a proper Postgres schema with migrations, tests (pytest), and a CI/CD pipeline (GitHub Actions). If you did AI, add: eval loops, cost tracking, guardrails, and a real production deployment.
Also: fix three issues in a real open-source Python project. Even documentation fixes count for the first one. The point is public commit history to a repo you don't own — hiring managers filter on this hard.
Month 4: Interview prep + application blitz
Split your time in thirds:
Third one — coding interview prep. LeetCode Easy + Medium, focused on: arrays, hashmaps, strings, one graph problem, one DP problem. Our 104 Interview Prep lessons cover exactly this list plus behavioral STAR templates.
Third two — system design lite. For junior, this is about clarity not depth. Watch three Educative or ByteByteGo videos, practice explaining a URL shortener out loud. That's it.
Third three — applications. 100 applications. Not spray-and-pray — 100 real, customized applications. Every application: resume top bullet rewritten to match the exact stack, cover letter that mentions why you specifically want to work at this company, LinkedIn message to a current engineer at the company (short, honest, "I'm applying and would love a 15-min chat if you have time").
Expect 5-15 callbacks from 100 real applications. Expect 2-5 first-round interviews. Expect 1-2 offers if your projects are deployed and your code is clean.

- Company career pages directly: Tesla, Meta Austin, Cloudflare, Indeed, Q2, Bumble
Skip Indeed for tech-specific roles. It's mostly recruiter middlemen who mark up your salary without adding value.
What Austin hiring managers actually screen for
Talked to about a dozen local hiring managers over the past year. Their shared filters:
- Public code shipped — deployed URL + GitHub repo with real commit history
- README quality — if you can explain the architecture clearly in three paragraphs, you can probably communicate on the job too
- A clear stack choice — not "I know Python, JavaScript, Java, Ruby." One deep stack beats five shallow ones
- A specific reason for wanting this specific company — Austin companies compete for talent, they can afford to filter on this
- Willingness to come to the office occasionally — most Austin roles are hybrid now, not fully remote. Even fully remote roles sometimes fly you in quarterly
The honest expectation
Month 4 gets you to "junior interviewable" for the local mid-market, and "possibly interviewable" for remote roles at Bay Area companies. If you're aiming for FAANG, plan for 8-12 months and a serious LeetCode grind.
But the $95K-$125K remote junior offer? Achievable in 4 months if you finish the plan. That is a life-changing outcome from a zero start.
